A visit to the 1890 Tea House in historic downtown Ocala — afternoon tea, charcuterie, and the lost art of slowing down over a good pot and good conversation.

There is a particular kind of luxury that has nothing to do with price and everything to do with permission — the permission to slow down, to linger, to let an afternoon unspool over a warm pot of tea and unhurried conversation. We don't give ourselves nearly enough of it. So when I found a place in our own historic downtown built entirely around that idea, I knew I'd be back again and again.
The 1890 Tea House sits at 917 East Silver Springs Boulevard, tucked inside the historic Diamond Suites building, and from the moment you step inside, it does exactly what its name promises: it carries you back to an era when gatherings revolved around comfort, conversation, and food made with care. In a world that has trained us to eat fast and leave faster, the whole place is a gentle, deliberate rebellion.

A step back in time, right downtown
What I love most is how thoroughly the space commits to its charm. The historic building gives it good bones — that lovely, settled feeling old places have — and the tea house leans into it with traditional service and a sense of occasion you simply don't find in most modern spots. It feels like being welcomed into someone's beautifully kept parlor rather than seated at a restaurant.
There are private tea rooms for those who want something quieter still — a cozy corner for two, or a gathering for a celebration — and out front, a generous patio set off from the sidewalk, perfect for a sunny Ocala afternoon when you want to watch the world go by at a civilized pace.

The art of tea, and a few delicate bites
The heart of it all, of course, is the tea — and the selection is wonderful. Whether you reach for a classic Earl Grey or Darjeeling, a bright matcha, or a warm, spiced chai, there's a pot waiting to suit your mood. (And for the days that call for it, there's a full coffee bar too — espresso, lattes, cold brew — so no one in your party is left out.)
But the 1890 Tea House understands that tea is really an excuse for the rest of it: the slow, lovely ritual of small, beautiful food shared across a table. You can settle in with delicate tea sandwiches, a dessert platter, or a full charcuterie board, and let the afternoon stretch. It's the kind of meal that isn't really about being full — it's about being present.
And if your gathering leans a touch more celebratory, they've thought of that as well, with wine, beer, sangria, and mimosas on offer. A pot of tea or a glass of sangria on that patio, with people you love and nowhere in particular to be — that's about as close to a perfect afternoon as I can imagine.
Why a place like this matters
I think about this more than I probably should, but a tea house like this one feels connected to the very thing I believe in most: that the good life is built slowly, with intention, and savored rather than rushed. It's the same reason I love a sunrise on the farm and a thing made carefully by hand. The 1890 Tea House is that philosophy poured into a cup — a small, civilized act of choosing the unhurried thing on purpose.
In our hurry-everything culture, there's something quietly radical about an afternoon spent doing nothing but enjoying good tea, good food, and good company. We could all use a great deal more of it.
If you'd like to go
The 1890 Tea House is at 917 E Silver Springs Blvd, Ocala, and it's open Wednesday and Thursday from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m., Friday and Saturday from 11 a.m. to 9 p.m., and Sunday from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. You can call them at 352-244-8368 — and if you're planning afternoon tea with friends or a small celebration, it's worth asking about the private rooms.
Go on a slow afternoon. Order the pot you've been curious about. Build a charcuterie board to share, let the conversation wander, and stay longer than you meant to. That, after all, is the entire point.
If you make it out, I'd love to hear what you ordered — come tell me about your afternoon.
